Municipal Energy Agency of Seixal – AMESEIXAL

AMESEIXAL is a Municipal Energy Agency created in the year 2000 by the Municipality of Seixal together with 11 portuguese institutions to carry out local level activities in energy areas. AMESEIXAL has been granted with a SAVE II Programme funding (European Commission – DG TREN).

AMESEIXAL main objectives are to reduce the energy consumption in all the activity sectors to promote a wider use of energy sources and to lay the foundations for a local sustainable development.

Main Projects

Energy efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources
- Energy Balance for the Municipality of Seixal;
- Energy audits;
- Outline a plan to reduce the energy bill paid by the City Council of Seixal and other private companies (TST-Transportes Sul do Tejo, SIMARSUL, Confeitaria Monte Sião, City Council of Portalegre, AMARSUL and FLORINEVE).
- The tariff tax optimization in City Council of Seixal enabled to save 173.000 €;
- Energy saving campaign to reduce electricity consumption in Seixal City Council services (- 4,1% in 2008);
- Definition of a retrofitting strategy for the primary schools of the municipality;
- Projects for installation of solar collectors in municipality's swimming pools;
- Isothermal covers study for the swimming pool of Corroios;
- Heating system study for the new swimming pool of Paio Pires;
- Strategy for the reduction of electricity consumption in the Public Lighting.

Communication
- Publication of energy articles in the “Boletim Municipal” (65.000 copies distributed for free) and in other local newspapers;
- Radio programme development whit a radio broadcasting station about Energy efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources
- Flyers publication;

- Energy awareness sessions for students of all ages;
- Training courses on solar collector installation;
- Exhibitions on Renewable Energy Technologies;
- Implementation of the project “Green Seal – Environmentally friendly building”;
- Ecofamilies Project (energy auditing in households).

Sustainable mobility
- Protocol signature with the City Council of Seixal and with BIOSARG (a local biodiesel producer, to collect wasted cooking oil and produce biodiesel)
- Biodiesel production study and the use of this oil in the municipality transport fleet;
- Energy auditing of the municipality transport fleet;
- Implementation of the project “ride a bicycle for your health: car free Sundays in Seixal / Amora”;
- Project “Car Pooling” (www.carpooling-ameseixal.com);
- Participation in initiatives linked to “European Car Free Days” and “Agita Seixal” a programme with many sport activities.
